Buying a house in Fuengirola

Anyone looking for a house in Fuengirola is after what a flat cannot give: a front door of their own, a garden or patio and, ideally, a pool. In such a compact municipality the supply is limited and split between detached villas, terraced townhouses and semi-detached homes. Torreblanca, the hillside east of the centre, holds a good part of it, followed by Los Pacos, Los Boliches and El Coto —the latter within Mijas—, while a few low-rise houses survive among the blocks in the centre, close to the beach.

A typical house offers around 197 m² of built area and a plot of 361 m², with three or four bedrooms. 46 of the 83 houses look out to sea. A private pool comes with 45 of them. Prices vary widely by type: a townhouse in a community with a shared pool has little in common with a villa on its own plot at the top of Torreblanca. Buyers are mostly families and residents who live on the coast all year.

Each area has its own character: Torreblanca combines views, sloping streets and its own train station; Los Boliches is the most traditional quarter, with a beach and street life; Los Pacos, inland, is quieter and looks towards the Mijas mountains; and El Coto offers small communities on the hills overlooking the town. Factor in upkeep too: a garden and a pool bring fixed costs that a flat does not have.
