Buying an apartment in Fuengirola

Fuengirola is above all a town of apartments: the municipality is small and densely built, so a flat is the most common way to live here. The offer runs through every neighbourhood: blocks facing the sea along the promenade, renovated flats in the centre and Los Boliches, hillside buildings in Torreblanca, quiet Carvajal at the eastern end and, on the hill next to Benalmádena, the resort-style complexes of Reserva del Higuerón and Higuerón West.

Two bedrooms and around 94 m² of built area is the most common layout; three-bedroom flats are also plentiful, and there are studios and one-bedroom flats for buyers who want something practical near the beach. 339 of the 584 flats have sea views. Buyers include residents from all over Europe —Fuengirola has a long-established Scandinavian community— and second-home owners who value good connections. Check the orientation, the terrace, the lift and the parking space, which is scarce in the centre, and what the community fees cover in complexes with a spa or gym.

The train is the big advantage: Fuengirola is the terminus of the C1 commuter line, with stations in the centre, Los Boliches, Torreblanca and Carvajal, and the airport is about twenty minutes away. If you are thinking of holiday letting, make sure the community and local regulations allow it and that the flat can be registered with the Andalusian Tourism Register (Registro de Turismo de Andalucía).
