Buying a villa in Benahavís

Benahavís is, above all, villa country. From near the coast up to the mountains, very different areas follow one another: the golf courses of La Quinta —with gated communities such as Vega del Colorado—, Los Arqueros and Los Flamingos, closer to the sea; the cork oaks and large plots of El Madroñal; the private estate of La Zagaleta, with its two golf courses; and the Monte Mayor valley, surrounded by woodland. Many villas look out to sea, and from the highest, on clear days, you can make out Gibraltar and the coast of Africa.

The typical villa has 610 m² of built area on a plot of around 1,963 m², with five or six bedrooms, a pool, a garden and, in the largest, a guest apartment, gym or spa. 171 of the 227 enjoy sea views. 39 of the 227 are new builds. Andalusian-style villas with a few years behind them sit alongside recent contemporary houses with large glass walls. Buyers are mostly international families looking for privacy, security and space without moving too far from the coast.

The choice comes down to the balance between seclusion and convenience: La Quinta, Los Arqueros and Los Flamingos are ten minutes or less from the coast, with golf on the doorstep; El Madroñal and La Zagaleta, higher up, offer huge plots and silence fifteen to twenty minutes from Puerto Banús; and Monte Mayor is more remote, deep in nature. Many plots are steep, so check access roads, retaining walls and drainage.
