Buying a villa in Mijas

Mijas offers very different settings for a villa. La Cala Golf, with its three courses —América, Asia and Europa—, and Mijas Golf, home to Los Lagos and Los Olivos, are the main golf villa areas; on the coast, El Chaparral, El Faro, Riviera del Sol and Calahonda offer villas among pine trees close to the beach; and in the inland hills —Valtocado, Buenavista, Campo Mijas or the road up to Mijas Pueblo— plots tend to be larger and the views take in the whole coastline.

The typical villa has four or five bedrooms and around 333 m² of built area on a plot of about 930 m². A private pool comes with 284 of the 324. Older villas ready for renovation sit alongside Andalusian-style homes with mature gardens and contemporary new builds, many of them in La Cala Golf. Buyers are mostly families settling on the coast and people after a spacious second home; the range runs from modest villas to luxury homes.

The hills offer more land, privacy and views, but the slopes mean driving everywhere; in El Chaparral, El Faro, Riviera del Sol or Calahonda plots tend to be a little smaller, with the beach and shops close by; and La Cala Golf and Mijas Golf have gated communities overlooking the courses. Fuengirola and La Cala de Mijas are ten to fifteen minutes from almost anywhere, and Málaga airport twenty to forty minutes away.
