Buying an apartment in Mijas

Apartments make up the largest share of homes for sale in Mijas, in very different settings. On the coast, between El Chaparral and Calahonda, complexes with gardens and shared pools sit close to the beach, with La Cala de Mijas as the liveliest hub; inland, the communities of Mijas Golf, Calanova Golf and La Cala Golf look out over the fairways; and in Las Lagunas, next to Fuengirola, flats in town blocks have every service at street level.

Most have two bedrooms and around 93 m² of built area, although three-bedroom units are common too; a south-facing terrace, a parking space and a storage room all make a difference. Sea views feature in 339 of the 632 listings. Buyers are mainly Europeans who winter here, retirees and, in Las Lagunas, families who live on the coast all year. Always ask about community fees: in complexes with large gardens and several pools, shared costs add up.

For year-round living, Las Lagunas is the most practical choice: shops, schools and a health centre, with Fuengirola station —commuter trains to the airport and Málaga— a few minutes away. La Cala de Mijas combines beach, promenade and restaurants with a village feel; Riviera del Sol and Calahonda are fifteen to twenty minutes from Marbella; and in the quieter golf complexes a car is essential. The airport is twenty to thirty-five minutes away.
